Donny van de Beek has been out in the cold for far too long.

In summer 2020, Manchester United fans were frothing at the mouth. The Old Trafford club had finally signed a top-class midfielder in the form of Donny van de Beek.

Our Dutchman would start well, scoring on debut and linking the play together nicely. The early signs were promising.

Sadly, that hope fizzled out quickly. Van de Beek would often remain rooted to the bench and when he did make a rare appearance as a substitute, the former Ajax man would struggle. Confidence was lost pretty rapidly.

His first campaign was a total write-off. I’ll admit, I expected Van de Beek to have featured more than he has in 2021/22. However, in the EFL Cup against West Ham United a few weeks ago, Van de Beek looked sharp. Why he’s remained absent ever since is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Perhaps the Baby Faced Assassin is waiting for the right moment. Now, with games coming thick and fast across multiple competitions, there’s no more excuses. Here are three reasons why Van de Beek deserves his first team chance in the not too distant future.

Fred still isn’t cutting it

Solskjaer seems to have an unwavering trust in Fred. But we need to face the facts. He’s been here for years now and the inconsistency within his game remains there for all to see.

It’s down to United to accept the fact that Fred is what he is. As a squad player I’d keep him around, but a week-in-week-out starter? I’m not sure he’s that vital. We’ll see this weekend as he’s not going to be involved against Leicester due to international commitments.

At this point, I’m not sure what Fred is better at than Van de Beek. At the very least, why not give our Dutchman a chance to prove himself?

Games are coming thick and fast

United’s schedule is jam-packed from now until the new year, pretty much. The Reds are competing in both the Premier League and Champions League. This modern-day era is about having a deep squad.

Van de Beek is someone who can dip in and out of the side, in multiple positions all across the midfield, and do a top job. Honestly, I don’t get it. What’s not to like?

At some point, we have to give this man a real run in the side. Let him build confidence. Let him show the world what he’s capable of.

He’s had time to adapt to the Premier League

This is it. Van de Beek has adjusted to life in a new country. He’s adapted to a new style of play. What’s the point in paying him massive wages, week-in-week-out, if we’re just going to let him rot away on the bench?

Solskjaer needs to get a good look at the player and know that he’s good enough to play for this side. There can be no more excuses if Van de Beek fails this season – but he deserves that opportunity at the very least.
