The wife of a security guard ‘collapsed in tears’ at court after finding out her husband trafficked drugs across the country.

John ‘Winky’ Watson, 41, alongside his friends Craig Costello, 38, and Steven Beazley, 39, were part of a sophisticated and organised drugs ring that flooded the streets of Teesside with cocaine couriered in from Merseyside.

The gang were trafficking the drugs between the counties from September 2015 and October 2016.

The probe has already led to convictions of a number of senior drug traffickers, including Teesside man Jonathon Moorby and Merseyside drug boss Lance Kennedy.

All three denied conspiracy to supply class A drugs but were found guilty by a Jury in Teesside Crown Court today (Wednesday, October 13).

The wife of Watson, Joanne, began sobbing in the public gallery after Costello was found guilty.

When the verdict was announced his mother cried out in court and left the room, while his sister dropped the shopping bags she was holding.

And ahead of a likely prison sentence, Costello only had two words to say over the phone about the verdict: “Ah well”.

The 38-year-old skipped his month long trial, with Teesside Crown Court told that he’d fled to Dubai.

A warrant has been issued for Costello ‘s arrest as he failed to turn up at the trial, having previously denied the charges against him.

As Beazley was found guilty his mum shouted from the gallery, she said: “NO, He’s done nowt wrong.”

Judge Howard Crowson said to the mother that he understood she was finding it difficult, and if so, it’s best to leave the court room.

She responded: “But he’s my baby,” before leaving.

As the foreman of the jury read the majority guilty verdict of Watson, his wife ‘collapsed in tears’ before leaving the court.

Watson’s parents also watched from the gallery.

In 2018, Watson received national attention, appearing on Good Morning Britain to discuss his business, which offered private home security for £13 a year.

Concerns were raised about the business in Parliament, with Anna Turley saying that locals were “losing such confidence in the ability of the police to protect them”.
