Barcelona have reached a breakthrough in contract negotiations for youngster Pedri, according to reports.
The 18-year-old has become the subject of numerous transfer rumours in recent weeks, with Liverpool one of the clubs said to be interested in the player.
Pedri has made just four first-team appearances for the La Liga club so far this season, but made 37 league appearances last term in what was a breakthrough campaign.
He’s certainly a player for the future and one Barcelona are desperate to keep a hold of, so much so, they’ve reportedly inserted a huge release clause into the new deal.
According to Goal, potential suitors would need to pay €600million (£509million) – while Fabrizio Romano claims the clause is closer to €1billion (£849million).
It’s a significant fee for such a young player, but his long term future is set to be at Barcelona with an extension until 2026 reportedly on the verge of being signed.
Pundit Gary Lineker responded to the news on social media, as he replied to Romano’s tweet: “That’s one helluva release clause.”
Pedri’s current contract at Camp Nou is set to expire at the end of the season, which reportedly alerted clubs across Europe and links with Liverpool have emerged in the Spanish press in recent weeks.
However, the Reds ‘hopes’ of signing the prospect have seemingly been dashed and any future chances will become slim with the rumoured jaw-dropping release clause.
This will be welcomed developments for Barcelona following the shock departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain this summer amid financial difficulties.
