Chelsea was one of the major teams in the Ballon d’Or ceremony this time. A few days ago, the official 30 man shortlist was announced by France Football. While we got to see some of the more expected players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, we also got to see some names we would not have expected. This time, the Premier League was one of the most nominated leagues and almost half the players from the list play in the English league. While this is a great feeling for English fans, Chelsea fans can celebrate even more.

The Blues boasts five players from the club who have been selected for the prestigious award. Not only the expected choices but a few unexpected ones as well. This time, the foundation seems to have taken note of individual performances around the field, and not just the forwards. Players such as Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Ruben Diaz, etc, have been named in the 30 man list, and Jorginho has even been tipped to win the award. Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante and Romelu Lukaku were the other nominees from Chelsea.

However, although the Blues have the highest number of nominees, tied with Manchester City, there is only one man who can realistically win it and that is Jorginho. The Italian has been linked with the prestigious award for months and his triple European success skyrocketed him to the top of the footballing world. Thomas Tuchel and Roberto Mancini have both said that the Italian deserves the award however, strong competition from Messi, Roberto Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe, etc, might ruin his chances.

While the award is typically awarded to the more attacking players, this might be the first time since 1996 when Matthias Sammer won the Ballon d’Or, that a defensive midfielder might win the greatest individual accolade. Today we will be looking at five reasons why he deserves and does not deserve the Ballon d’Or.
