Manchester City aren’t short of goalkeepers with Ederson, Zack Steffen and Scott Carson at their disposal, but El Nacional say they looking at another shot-stopper – Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The 29-year-old is a regular at Barcelona and regarded as an ‘untouchable player’, but the report suggests he could be offloaded to alleviate the Catalans’ financial crisis.
Barcelona are in £1.2bn debt and had to cut the wages of many first-team players to allow them to register new signings, so selling ter Stegen would help their situation. He earns €9m-a-year (£7.6m-a-year) and has an asking price of €60m (£50.9m).
El Nacional recognise that Barca don’t have a good backup goalkeeper for the Germany international, however, so it remains to be seen if he’d be transfer listed.
It also doesn’t make sense why City need another shot-stopper. Ederson has made 201 appearances in all competitions since joining from Benfica in 2017, conceding 152 goals while keeping 100 clean sheets.
He also has five years remaining on his deal at the Etihad, so it’s hard to see him losing his place in the side or being sold.
