Pep Guardiola has built a successful legacy at Manchester City and is already being hailed as a legend and one of the most successful coaches that City have ever had. Guardiola has won ten trophies in 5 years at Manchester City and statistically, he is the best ever, at City.
The leadership at City has been fairly stable, to say the least, in the last 4-5 years. With a safe house in Pep Guardiola at the helm, the City chiefs are more than happy to put their faith in him for the foreseeable future. Having said that, Guardiola could’ve joined Manchester United back in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson retired as a football manager.
As per Mirror, United could have appointed Guardiola as their next boss. It is understood that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Pep Guardiola to ring him before he joined a new club back in 2013. Guardiola was managing Barcelona until 2013 and enjoyed a golden run of trophies in his stint with the struggling former La Liga champions. He then went on to sign for Bayern Munich.
Writing in his autobiography, SAF revealed that he wanted Guardiola to consult with him before he took on a new job.
“I had dinner with Pep Guardiola in New York in 2012, but couldn’t make him any direct proposal because retirement was not on my agenda at that point.
“He had already won an enviable number of trophies with Barcelona…and I admired him greatly.
“I asked Pep to phone me before he accepted an offer from another club, but he didn’t and wound up joining Bayern Munich in July 2013.”
Guardiola has established a fine legacy at City and his Premier League victory last season is likely to be remembered for years to come. The Spaniard employed the ‘false 9’ strategy to brilliance and came extremely close to winning the club’s and his first UEFA Champions League title ever since he left Barcelona.
With a very challenging title race coming up for the Cityzens, City have made a bright start to this year’s campaign despite losing their season opener against Leicester City. However, things would have been very different if Guardiola ended up at Old Trafford in 2013 or after his stint in Munich.
