Former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi feels that Manchester City are one of the toughest competitors in the UEFA Champions League alongside Manchester United and Chelsea, according to The Mirror.
In an interview with L’Equipe, Messi said:
“It is true that the centre of attention is on PSG, but there are other strong teams, such as Chelsea, the Manchester teams (United and City), Real Madrid, who always responds, Inter Milan, Bayern.”
The Argentinian superstar was in the plans of Pep Guardiola prior to Grealish deal. But the Cityzens looked thoroughly satisfied with the Aston Villa winger and withdrew from Messi’s race. They didn’t even officially bid for the Blaugrana legend.
After having a staggering Copa America , where he solely led Argentina to his first international title with the national side, Messi suffered a heartbreak after Barcelona was unable to sign a new deal with the 34-year old amidst strict rules imposed by La Liga.
Manchester City started of their UCL campaign in rampant style. They tormented RB Leipzig with a scoreline of 6-3 at the Etihad. With all six goals coming from the different players, it was a very dominating display by Pep’s men, who were hunting down the only missing piece of silverware in their cabinet.
In their second outing of the UEFA Champions League, Manchester City succumbed to a 0-2 defeat to Paris Saint-German at the Parc des Princes. The match was set to be a mouth-watering one with the clash between two of the richest clubs in the world. PSG started with the favourites tag after City’s manager Pep Guardiola admitted that he had absolutely no clue on how to stop the Messi-Neymar-Mbappe trio.
Though City started on a bright note, keeping dominant possession and playing on a high line, there was always a threat on the counters. Eventually, it was Messi who exploited a loop in Manchester City’s back line, if there was ever one, and scored a scintillating goal in the second half to seal the encounter in PSG’s favour. Ironically, it was also first instance of him getting on a scorecard for a club other than Barcelona.
So, will the Sky blues seek revenge on the reverse fixture against a star-studded PSG? Will they be able to make it to the Round of 16 from an extremely competitive Group A? Well, please do comment your opinions.
