A Liverpool pub has been named one of the ‘cosiest’ in the UK.

As we head towards winter it’s the perfect time to seek out those welcoming pubs where you can get warm by the fire.

We certainly know of plenty of cosy pubs across Merseyside where you can tuck into some hearty food, and feel snug away from the cold.

But now, one Liverpool pub has made it onto a list of the 100 cosiest pubs in Britain.

Food critic Tom Parker Bowles and wine expert Olly Smith compiled the index for the Mail on Sunday, after searching the length and breadth of Britain to find the places that will keep you warm on the coldest of days.

The pair said a cosy pub is one with a “roaring fire, comfy nooks to dwell in, ideally dogs welcome, great grub and a carefully chosen gathering of ales and wines”. The collection of 100 pubs featured several in the ‘North’, including venues in Newcastle, Manchester and Yorkshire. But only one in Merseyside made the grade – The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, or ‘The Phil’ as it’s more commonly known to regulars.

The pub was chosen by Tom Parker Bowles, who called it a “stunner”, for being, in his words, “the most handsome of pubs, with high ceilings, repousse copper panels, mosaics, mahogany and stained glass”.

He continued: “Dazzling and flamboyant, the pub has its own place in history as ‘the most ornate pub in England’. Known as ‘The Phil’, its magnificent hostelry takes its name from Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall opposite. Commissioned between 1898 and 1900, it is a showpiece in the style of a gentlemen’s club.

“With the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Choir and Society so close, the pub has long been a favourite with concert-goers and performers alike. The ‘Phil’ received Grade I-listed recognition from Historic England last year.”
