Liverpool have been dealt a potential injury blow to Diogo Jota with Portugal weighing up a decision to return him to his club.

The Reds forward is with the Seleccao as they prepare for Tuesday’s game with Luxembourg at Estadio Algarve, but was not part of the squad that beat Qatar 3-0 on Saturday.

Jota missed Monday’s open training session with what is reported to be a muscle issue and could be dispatched back to Liverpool before the end of the international round of fixtures.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos said Jota has not been fit enough to take part in a full training session so far and plans to speak to the former Wolves man before a decision is made.

“He trained a while ago, increased the intensity today with (physio) Joao Brito, but he didn’t train with us,” Santos told a press conference.

“The probability [that Jota will play] will be little. I’ll talk to him and see how he feels.

“If we see that he is in any condition to be on the bench and then he can come in, that’s fine.

“If we don’t, we won’t take the risk with a player who hasn’t been able to train with us for a long time.

“I’ll make the decision shortly, and if he can’t play, he’ll head back to Liverpool.”

It means Jota ‘s participation in Saturday’s trip to Watford is now in jeopardy as Jurgen Klopp returns to work this week to begin preparations for the visit to Vicarage Road.

Liverpool are already sweating on the fitness of Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones for the game, while there are question marks over Alisson Becker and Fabinho’s availability.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold has missed Liverpool’s last two matches with an adductor injury.

With Brazil playing Uruguay around 35 hours before the game at Watford, Klopp is unlikely to have either his goalkeeper or midfielder ready in time for selection.

The pair have not formally been ruled out but are facing an uphill battle to declare themselves as in contention given the tight turnaround between their games for country and club.
