Manchester Citys Raheem Sterling reacts during Carabao Cup Final v Aston Villa

Calciomercato said earlier in the week that Arsenal were interested in Raheem Sterling and offered a transfer fee plus one of three players to procure his signature, but it’s hard to see them having success.

Sterling does have an uncertain future at Manchester City after losing his starting place under Pep Guardiola, but there’s no indication he would be happy to join Arsenal. And do the Gunners even have the resources?

Mikel Arteta has Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who can operate as a wide forward, but he clearly wants another with a prolific scoring record.

Sterling has made 302 appearances in all competitions since joining Man City in 2015, scoring 115 goals with 88 assists. The 26-year-old has hit double figures for goals in each of his last four seasons at the Etihad Stadium, so he fits the bill.

City paid £44m for Sterling six years ago and his market value is currently £81m, so that might be too steep for Arsenal. And why would the England international join a side languishing outside of the Champions League places if he had his pick of clubs?

It doesn’t make a lot of sense, so the likelihood of Arsenal luring Sterling from Manchester appears slim.

In other news, Man City may have to pay £63.7m and £5.1m-a-year wages to sign 35-goal striker
