Newcastle takeover has led to £200m transfer boost but they have £560m Liverpool gap to plug

Following the purchase of Newcastle United by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, there were soon big-name players being half-heartedly suggested as potential transfer targets.

Though some fans were quick to celebrate their owners’ wealth, the North East club may not be able to splash the cash in the same manner that Manchester City did back in 2008.

Due to Financial Fair Play rules stating that a club must not run losses of more than £105m over a three-year period, it means that Newcastle will have to spend money gradually, improving both their players and the club’s general infrastructure over a period of time.

Liverpool’s current squad was estimated by CIES to be worth £742m, a difference of almost £560m when compared to Newcastle, leaving the club with much work to do before they are able to compete with the Reds.

Paul Scholes makes Liverpool trophy prediction and explains Manchester United ‘difference’

The former Manchester United midfielder has begrudgingly admitted he thinks Liverpool are one of the favourites for the Champions League.

Alongside Manchester City, Scholes believes United’s two arch rivals are the frontrunners for the European Cup and has outlined the difference between the Reds and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Manchester United lost their opening group game to Swiss club Young Boys, before needing a last-minute goal from Cristiano Ronaldo to secure a win against Villarreal – and Scholes believes he has pinpointed why he feels Liverpool are a much stronger proposition.

“That’s the difference between United and, I think, Liverpool and City. They’re much more aggressive and attack minded,” he said.
