Carlisle Castle: Feel a connection with history

0 22222222222222222222

Cumbria’s medieval fortress is over 900 years old and stands on the site of a former Roman fort near Hadrian’s Wall. History lovers will marvel at its resilience: as a border stronghold for the English, it survived numerous raids over the centuries. You’ll get that “in this very spot” feeling as you visit the turret where Elizabeth I kept Mary Queen of Scots captive. Admire the “prisoners” carvings in the castle keep (now thought to be the work of prison guards during tedious shifts), and discover the history of Cumbria’s soldiers at the Museum of Military Life.

Blackpool Tower Circus: Take a ringside seat

The Tower Circus Arena has a long and glittering history, entertaining families since the 19th century. Most beloved are the legendary clowns Mr Boo and Mooky (third-generation clowns and sons of circus director Laci Endresz Sr, who taught Take That to ride unicycles for their Circus tour); they will have children in fits of giggles, interspersed with gasps of awe as they perform terrifying stunts. Marvel at incredible acrobats, stare in disbelief as the centre of the arena transforms into a giant indoor lake, and revel in the audio-visual spectacular. This is a circus experience you’ll never forget.

RHS Garden Bridgewater: Explore all 154 acres!

This lovingly restored garden near Salford opened its gates just last year. It is a massive horticultural project that packs a huge variety into 154 acres, with its walled garden, woodland play area, Chinese streamside garden, a lake and much more.
