Liverpool v Man City: Match in pictures

Liverpool fear no team and they are capable of beating anyone.

Those are the bold claims of stalwart Joel Matip, who has every confidence the Reds can reclaim the Premier League title this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten after seven top-flight games and sit second in the table, sandwiched between leaders Chelsea and defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool drew 2-2 with City last weekend in a high-quality game which suggested this season’s title race could go down to the wire.

The Reds were arguably the happier of the two teams after leaving Anfield with a point, as the visitors dominated much of the match.

However, Matip insists Liverpool can defeat any opposition when they perform at their “100 per cent level”.

“I think we are in good shape and we don’t have to be afraid of any team, but we have to play our football 100 per cent,” the centre-back told the October edition of the Liverpool FC Magazine .

“It will be an intense and interesting season and we have a really good team. If we play at our 100 per cent level, we can beat everyone.”

Matip, 30, was among the many casualties of injury as Liverpool crumbled during their defence of the title last season.

The drastic loss of form was felt most keenly at Anfield, where the Reds lost six consecutive games having gone 68 Premier League matches unbeaten at home.

There were of course mitigating circumstances, as games were played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning Liverpool could not rely on their famous support to lift them.

“Playing in empty stadiums is something different,” said Matip. “Of course it is still football, but it feels different.”

But the Cameroonian is keen to point out Anfield is once again rocking this season, giving the Redmen “extra strength” to draw on.

He added: “It feels more like football when the supporters are there. It gives us extra strength. It is great being back in our stadium playing home Premier League games and trying to make the best out of having our fans back.”

So far this season, Matip has managed to avoid the injuries which have plagued his time at Liverpool since he arrived on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016.

The 6’5″ defender has played in all but one of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures as well as both of their Champions League group-stage games.

An unflappable presence at the back, Matip has also impressed with his desire to step out and has regularly been seen carrying the ball deep into the opposition half.
