Christmas may be the last thing on your mind in October but it’s fast approaching, with just 79 days left until the big day.
From food to presents and other preparations, the costs of the festive season can quickly mount up, meaning every extra penny can go a long way.
The tips include free money just for switching bank accounts and getting free Amazon vouchers to spend on Christmas presents.
Here’s eight ways you could make cash for Christmas, according to MoneySavingExpert.
1. Switch bank accounts and get up to £130
You could make up to £130 in cash simply by changing bank accounts.
Santander, First Direct and Virgin Money are among the banks offering people free cash if you switch to them.
But be sure to check the eligibility criteria carefully before changing banks to make sure you quality for the switch money.
Certain banks require you to have a minimum amount of money paid into your bank account each month in order to qualify.

2. Get up to £970 when you claim marriage tax allowance
It’s believed 2.4 million couples are eligible for the marriage tax allowance who aren’t claiming it.
To apply for the allowance you must fit the following criteria:
– You must be married or in a civil partnership
– Either you or your partner needs to be a non-taxpayer (earning under 12,570 per year)
– The other person needs to pay 20 per cent basic rate tax – meaning they must earn between £12,570 – £50,270 per year
It works by allowing one person to transfer 10 percent of their personal allowance to their spouse or civil partner – effectively lowering their tax bill.
It can also be backdated for four years if you were eligible back then, meaning you could receive up to £970.
3. Get a £125 Amazon voucher for halving your broadband costs
Firms must now tell existing customers whose contracts are ending about their cheapest deals – but this doesn’t include sign-up incentives.
Vodafone is among the companies who will give a £125 Amazon voucher to new customers signing up to its broadband and phone package.
The deal, which ends on Sunday, is for 35Mb fibre broadband and you’ll pay £19.50 per month on a two-year contract.
Another deal is with Plusnet who are offering a £75 prepaid Mastercard on £18.50 per month 10Mb broadband and phone package, for a one-year contract.
4. People working from home can get up to £140
If you were required to work from home, even for just one day, since the start of the current tax year then you can claim tax relief worth up to £140.
This means you’ll get a tax code change and pay less tax till April.
However, if you also worked from home between April 6 2020 and 5 April this year, you can get a cheque or bank transfer too worth up to £140.
This money should arrive within three weeks, which would take us to the end of October, while your tax code for this year will be changed within a few days.
5. Get vouchers with Amazon or Sainsbury’s
If you’re spending around £1,000 a month you could get cash back in the form of Amazon or Sainbury’s vouchers.
If you get accepted for an Amex Gold credit card and spend £3,000 on it within the first three months, you’ll build up enough bonus points for a £150 Amazon voucher, or to convert to Nectar points worth £265 to spend in Sainbury’s.
However, it’s important to only do this if you can clear the card in full each month to avoid the 24.5 per cent APR interest rate.
You’ll also pay a £140 yearly fee after you’ve had the card a year, so cancel before then if you want to avoid it
6. Take part in quick surveys and get a £30 Amazon voucher
If you take part in quick surveys you could earn Amazon vouchers which come in handy when buying Christmas presents.
MoneySavingExpert recommends using the survey site Swagbucks as you get a £20 bonus once you’ve earned £10 from answering questions.
You’ll receive the voucher within 10 days of earning the £10, so by mid-November at the latest.
7. Earn money by having a clear out
If you have old belongings sat gathering dust in your home you could make money simply by selling them.
Sites such as eBay and Facebook marketplace are a good place to start, but the amount you make will depend on what you choose to sell.
8. Use cashback sites
If you buy an item you want through a cashback site you’ll get some money back for doing so.
MoneySavingExpert said it’s important to keep in mind that pay outs on cashback sites aren’t certain until they’re in your account.
If the sites do pay out, it can be anything from a few days to six months so some may not come in time for Christmas.
