Boris Johnson is set to announce a rise to the so-called national living wage, according to reports.
The rise would mean a 5.7% increase for someone on the national living wage – the minimum wage paid to people over the age of 23 — to £9.42, the Times reports.
For someone working 35 hours per week, the increase would be worth an extra £928 a year before tax.
The party leader is reportedly only weeks away from signing-off on the minimum wage rise as he looks to lead from the front in establishing higher pay in society, the Mirror Online reports.
Mr Johnson was asked about the possible hike in the hourly floor rate but left the matter open ended, telling ITV News yesterday: “We will take guidance from the low pay commission, and we will see where we get to.”
It comes as the government carries out the cut to the £20 per week Universal Credit uplift, which was brought in at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Government has been pressing ahead with the cut despite concerns that hundreds of thousands of people will be plunged into poverty.
From Wednesday, no assessments will include the uplift, meaning that from October 13 – a week later – no payments will be received that include the extra money.
In his keynote Conservative Party conference speech later today, the prime minister is set to argue that by boosting “left behind” parts of the country it will ease pressure on the “overheating” south-east of England.
The Opposition party plans to drive a van around the perimeter of conference venue Manchester Central during Mr Johnson’s speech, displaying a poster urging ministers to “cancel the cut” to the household incomes of millions of people.
