Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has expressed his delight at seeing Sadio Mane back to his best for the Reds this season, suggesting he and Mohamed Salah can inspire a push for silverware.
The Reds’ wing duo each got on the scoresheet on Sunday in the breathless 2-2 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League, continuing their strong start to the 2021-22 campaign.
Given his incredible goalscoring exploits and the remarkable solo effort he netted against City, there has been a huge amount of focus on Salah as of late.
However, Mane has also rediscovered some of his best form, having failed to find his typical explosiveness and consistency for long spells of the previous campaign. Already the 29-year-old has four Premier League goals this term.
Speaking to Stats Perform (h/t Goal ), Enrique commented on the way the pair are working together – Salah set up Mane’s opening goal on Sunday – and said the two in form and in tandem can prompt a significant push for major honours for the Reds this season.
“[Liverpool have] really been depending on [Salah and Mane] a lot, you know,” he said.
“That’s the reality in the front three really, with [Roberto] Firmino in there as well. But mainly through Mane and Salah; apart from last season for Mane, they have always been the two that have carried the team in terms of goals.
“Obviously defensively while we have many great players and midfielders and everything. But when it comes to scoring the goals, we have always been depending on Mane and Salah really.
“So obviously Salah has always been like this even last season, he was still making numbers. But seeing Mane at his best again is amazing to see. I believe these two guys could be a massive difference for us to actually fight for something or not.”

While it’s still early days in the season, Liverpool do appear well placed to challenge for prizes, as they are playing as well as any side in Europe.
However, given the squad the Reds have is not as deep as some of their title rivals, manager Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that key men like Salah and Mane can get through the campaign unscathed.
Enrique did highlight one potential area of concern for Liverpool looking ahead though.
“It’s a shame because we are going to lose them in January because of the African Cup of Nations,” said the former left-back. “But these two, when they are are at this level, there are not many like them in the world.”
