Liverpool midfielder Thiago suffered a calf injury during the 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace which Jurgen Klopp hoped was “not too serious”, but a new Instagram post suggests otherwise
Liverpool midfielder Thiago has been seen on crutches after suffering a calf injury which will rule him out until mid-October.
The Spaniard went down clutching his lower leg during the 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace weekend before last and Jurgen Klopp had hoped the issue was a minor one.
But Thiago was unable to make the Premier League trip to Brentford on Saturday evening, with the Reds sorely missing his control as they were held to a 3-3 draw.
He is unlikely to feature again until after October’s international break, meaning he will miss a Champions League fixture against Porto and a vital top-flight clash with champions Manchester City.
Should the 30-year-old withdraw from international duty, he will play no part in Spain’s Nations League semi-final against Euro 2020-winners Italy.
Klopp believed Thiago’s latest setback was “not too serious” as he spoke after the win over Palace, but he later revised his assessment of the injury.
“It’s not 100 per cent clear when Thiago will be back,” the Liverpool manager said on Friday. “It’s a muscle in the calf issue, so after the international break probably. I don’t think there’s anything earlier possible. We will have to see.”
The injury is clearly not a minor one, as Thiago required crutches during a day out at Knowsley Safari with wife Julia Vigas, son Gabriel and daughter Siena.
Thiago’s injury comes at a bad time for Klopp, who is already light in midfield after Harvey Elliott suffered a dislocated ankle in the 3-0 victory at Leeds United earlier this month.

The situation was worsened last week as Naby Keita limped off during the 3-0 win over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup having appeared to kick the floor.
In the absence of Elliott, Keita and Thiago, Curtis Jones was handed a rare start in the Premier League against Brentford and his powerful shot from range put the Reds 3-2 up in the second half.
But Liverpool struggled to replicate their usual level of dominance on the fixture and the Bees battled back to earn a deserved point after the 3-3 draw.
The severity of Keita’s fresh injury is unknown, although Klopp appeared to hint he could return this side of the international break.
“It’s not a serious thing but we have to wait until the pain settles, pretty much. We will see about that,” said the German.
Liverpool’s first fixture after the October international fixtures is a trip to Watford in the Premier League.
