‘Time to go strong’
‘Tis a big game for Liverpool today, so it is.
With Manchester City and Chelsea playing each other, a win at Brentford will open up a gap on one if not both of their title rivals.
So it’s time to go strong.
Andy Robertson therefore comes back at left-back with the well-again Trent Alexander-Arnold on the other flank.
Alisson Becker goes back in goal, with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip reunited at centre-back.
The decision in midfield is who to select along with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. And his performance in midweek suggests Curtis Jones is worthy.
Up front, it’s too early for Roberto Firmino and while Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino both staked a claim against Norwich City, it’s Diogo Jota down the middle with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane either side.
My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Jones; Salah, Jota, Mane.
‘Jones and Origi start’
Paul Gorst: It’s been nineteen changes in total for Jurgen Klopp over the last three Liverpool games.
And we can expect that number to swell further when he recalls his big guns for the visit to Brentford on Saturday evening.
Next week is a sizeable one, with a visit to Porto in the Champions League to come on Tuesday before the welcoming of Manchester City to Anfield – but Klopp will keep his eyes on the prize of three points today, particularly as next Sunday’s visitors take a trip to Chelsea earlier in the day.
Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson all return for a completely different back five.
In midfield, the injury to Naby Keita hands Curtis Jones a chance alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
And up top, I’m keeping faith with Divock Origi as his apparent renaissance goes on. He’s down the middle between Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Jones; Salah, Origi, Mane.
‘Time for graft’
Joe Rimmer: Liverpool won’t have it all their own way against Brentford.
Indeed, Thomas Frank’s outfit have proven to be a tough nut to crack since their promotion to the Premier League, conceding just three times and collecting eight points.
Therefore the Reds will be required to graft, so who better to bring in than James Milner? He’d make up my midfield three along with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
I’d also bring back Roberto Firmino to lead the line with his mates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The defence is made up of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.
My team (4-3-3): Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Milner; Mane, Salah, Firmino
