Gogglebox fans were delighted by the show’s return last week.

Series 18 kicked off on Friday, September 17 after a four-month break.

Pete and Sophie, Ellie and Izzi and our other favourite TV critics watched the likes of Vigil, Ready to Mingle, Beat the Chasers, Help, Antiques Roadshow, Life Drawing Live! and Take a Hike.

And with Strictly Come Dancing, Great British Bake Off and I’m A Celebrity airing this autumn, we can’t wait to hear their opinions.

But with a new series came some serious changes.

This included returning cast members, new faces and several makeovers.

Stars dropout

Paige Deville revealed she had quit the programme ahead of the first episode of the new season last Friday – as Birmingham Live reports.

The 25 year-old accused the bosses of the popular Channel 4 show of providing “zero aftercare support” in her announcement.

She tweeted: “It’s been an experience but one I cannot continue with due to long hours of filming, restrictiveness, control of our actions and opinions & zero aftercare support but hey who cares about ex cast, their NTA winners”.

Paige appeared on the show alongside her mum Sally – and said her decision to quit was also influenced by an “irreversible” split with her co-star.

In response to Paige’s accusations, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: “The welfare of contributors – past and present – is of paramount importance and robust protocols are in place to support contributors before, during and after taking part in the series.”

A new arrival

Pete announced he was expecting a child with partner Paige Yeomans on the show back in April and admitted he was feeling overwhelmed after becoming a parent.

He said: “He’s cool little lad, takes after his mum not me!

“I’ve been up all night, I slept on the train here – got suitcases under my eyes, you just got me at a good time now.”

And viewers of the show didn’t have to wait too long to meet the new arrival as season 18 opened with the heart-warming scene of Pete cradling his baby son.

Old faces return

The Baggs family were reported to have left the show on good terms after just one series.

In early March 2021, an insider claimed that they would no longer be appearing.

But mum Lisa furiously denied the claims on social media, saying the family weren’t “dropped”.

Lisa, dad Terry and their sons George and Joe made their return on last week’s opening episode, delighting fans.

New house for Ellie and Izzie

During the season break, Ellie was hard at work renovating her living room.

The-28-year-old gave a sneak peek of her new home back in August, but Gogglebox fans got a proper look at it on tonight’s season 18 premiere.

The stylish living room impressed fans who took to Twitter to say how much they loved Ellie’s new backdrop.

Ash commented: “Blimey have Ellie and Izzy moved house or redecorated.”

Ella added: “Bloody love Ellie’s orange wall radiator on.”

Stephen and Daniel’s transformation

Stephen has been a part of Gogglebox since the first season with his husband Daniel joining him on the couch in 2019.

But the pair have chopped off their long locks, revealing their new look prior to the show’s return.

They also spent the summer training for a hike up Ben Nevis in aid of charity.

Goodbye to some friends

Sadly, several cast members died over the summer break.

Andy Michael died in August 2021 at the age of 61 following a short illness.

His family first appeared on Gogglebox in the debut episode in 2013, but announced in 2014 that they were leaving because Andy was running for Ukip in the general election.

After he failed to secure the Hastings and Rye seat, the family returned for future episodes.

Mary Cook, another fan favourite, died in hospital in August aged 92.

The former hospitality worker joined the Channel 4 programme in 2016 alongside fellow Bristolian Marina Wingrove.

Pete McGarry died in June following a short illness.

Sharing a photo of Pete and his wife Linda on the show the official Gogglebox account said: ” We are deeply saddened to announce that Gogglebox star Pete McGarry passed away at the age of 71 this weekend with his family by his side after a short illness.

Gogglebox executive producer Victoria Ray said: “We have had people from the show pass away recently. We lost Mary and Andy. And a little while ago we lost Pete.

“Their loved ones won’t be taking part in the show for the moment. Understandably, they want their privacy.”
